Bot file editing is basically making any kind of modification to your bot, it's components, or any modification outside of the bot lab with the intended purpose to change or enhance the general performance of the robot. Through BFE, it is done by editing the .bot file through a txt editing program like Notepad.
If you are skilled, you can do a lot of things with bot file editing, from changing a simple stat value of a component within DSL to actually changing the entire shape, function, and design of the entire bot and it's components. However it is strongly considered cheating by most of the community, seen as a much greater evil than using Custom components. Bot File Editing is banned from most, if not all, Robot Arena 2 Tournaments.
